  1. People will often join a gym for the goal of becoming attractive.

And since she’s being hit on, she realizes that she’s attractive enough to postpone joining (or renewing membership to) a gym.

  2. I gotta say, this is the closest I’ve seen to seeing this lady, or anybody, smile in this cartoon. (In recent memory, at least.)

  3. Not everyone has access to a $10/month gym. (That availability is really just a guess by me.)

Health clubs, by the way, was Vic Lee’s business at some point in his life.

  4. I’m with Its Justme: given what a schlub he is, she doesn’t need to “compete” — doesn’t need to work out to be in the pool.

  5. This would make more sense with “get a gym membership yet.” You get a gym membership to become fit. Typically, the reason that you wouldn’t need to renew your gym membership yet is because it’s not about to expire, which has nothing to do with how fit you are. Perhaps she means that it’s about to expire, and she can just let it expire since she looks good enough, but then “yet” is a weird way of saying it, since once it expires, it will be too late to “renew” it – she’ll just have to get a new one.

Ugh, I’m really overthinking this comic.

  6. Having just recently joined a gym (albeit for the pool, so that might influence my results), I find that gym memberships are on the order of $47 to $77 a month, plus initiation fee of $40 to $99 (the first was a minimum kind of place in an apartment building, the second is a nice new facility). Even the Y wanted $60 a month, with I forget exactly ($50?) initiation…

  7. There will always be some guy to hit on a woman. She would just have a wider pool from which to select if she made herself more conventionally attractive.

  8. It’s really confused, even after the major attempts at clarification offered by CIDUers. For me, the main stumbling block is that she should be seeing thiis guy as unattractive, and in turn not wanting to attract him or his ilk. So then how do the explanations expect to still work that see her getting validation from this?

  9. I’m still confused as well. J-L’s explanation makes sense to me except for the whole eyes and ears part. Her eyes say that he’s hitting on her, which tells me he’s giving visual clues that he’s interested, not actually saying anything to her. So why would her ears be hearing anything at all?

  10. She and her live-in boyfriend are frequently shown in a bar socializing with members of the opposite sex. Commentary on the relationship or just a lazy way to set up a gag?

  11. Is her intent in going to the gym to look more attractive, or is that she’d get hit on at the gym? (We can read it as “she goes there to pick up guys” or as “creepy guys will hit on her/try to impress her at the gym, so since there’s a creepy guy doing there here, why bother to go to the gym?”)

@bensondonald – I get the impression that the “characters” in Pardon my Planet are more just designs, and not the same people strip-to-strip. Kind of like in xkcd.
