  1. I’m sure that the figure in the second panel is supposed to be a recognizable cartoon or movie dragon, but I cannot come up with a name for it.

  2. I showed the panel to my son, who instantaneously identified it as a “Glurak”. I was a bit puzzled, but before I could even come up with a followup question, he volunteered that that was the German name, and that it was called “Charizard” in English.
P.S. I’m not that bothered that he has encyclopedic knowledge of hindreds of Pokemon species, I just wish he could apply that ability to his school subjects.

  3. It’s obviously Charizard. Does that mean I get to turn in my geezer card? I just turned 42.

  4. He’s a pretty major Pokémon. Even if you can only recognize five Pokémon, I would think Charizard would be one of them.

What? You can’t even recognize one Pokémon, let alone five? Well done!

  5. I don’t need to recognize any Pokémon: I can subcontract that job out to my kids. My own naming ability is limited to exactly three: two from the TV series, and one that we received as a stuffed animal for my son.

  6. I knew it was a Pokemon. I can *name* one pokemon. I can give the names of …. two right now although it has been four in the past … and I can recognize about 7 beings as being pokemon. This was non of them but it seemed to be a pokemon.

“P.S. I’m not that bothered that he has encyclopedic knowledge of hindreds of Pokemon species, I just wish he could apply that ability to his school subjects.”

And yet when it comes to comic strips…

  7. dvandom is correct. According to the lore, Ditto has trouble getting the facial features right, and a Ditto trying to emulate a Charizard would end up looking like this.

  8. P.S. I’m not that bothered that he has encyclopedic knowledge of hindreds of Pokemon species

Hindreds: lots of things that slow you down.

  9. Pop culture osmosis can be a scary thing. I’m amazed at how many Pokemon I can name, despite never having played a single Pokemon game. When the trailer for Detective Pikachu came out, I was able to name every creature in the trailer. Including Charizard.

  10. I assumed that “not all of them” meant only one exception: humans. Also I completely ignored whatever it is in the second panel, because I thought I was reading Mark Trail.

  11. I recognized it immediately, but that’s because I carried one all around a museum on a field trip, as one of the kids in the group I was chaperoning had it and I didn’t want him to lose it. (He also had a camera to take pictures, and I was sure that 2 things was too many for an 8 year old to keep track of. Luckily, he agreed and Charizard spent the trip in my backpack.)

  12. Are there any little bears that are Pokemon? It would give me something else to look for, for the bear village – oh, crud! I forgot again to put out the ices wagon for one of them to sell ices since it is so hot. (The poor man who came with the cart will have to find another life.)

Right now I have been trying to find the bears from “We Bare Bears” in something like the keyrings made of them – but not the buy the sealed package and see what one gets.
