  1. Yes. Lose the nesting.

I use the “recent comments” list to see what I’ve missed. I click on the oldest I haven’t seen. Going forward from that point now can mean rereading older comments *and* missing newer ones.

    BTW, nice picture.

  2. Ditto. For cases in which a reference to the original is necessary to make a reply understandable, quoting (preferably a small section of) the text is an acceptable substitute for the numbering that this template does not support.

  3. Aaah! Ok: that’s what “nesting” means. Yes, please, do lose it.
Isn’t there some human tech support at WordPress’s who could help with the numbering of comments?

  4. If you want the numbers, you can (temporarily or permanently) turn off CSS formating. To turn it off in Firefox, that’s Alt-V, Y, [Enter]. To turn it back on, Alt-V, Y, [down arrow], [Enter].

In Opera, it’s toggled with Shift-G.

I always run with it turned off, so when the new site started it took me a while to understand that the rest of you couldn’t see the numbers, and why.

  5. Olivier, the nesting is gone.

Regarding the numbering, that isn’t an option. The set-up is, I have access to hundreds of templates, each with its own features. After a maddening amount of trial and error, I found on that’s somewhat intuitive, has a lot of space for the comics themselves, gives me a sidebar to use almost the way I’d like, and isn’t ugly as sin.

The trade-off is, there aren’t a lot of possible tweaks.

  6. Just to pile on, I too am happy without the nesting.

BTW, if you ever want to see what the site would be like with numbering, the ol’ hijack site (still linked on my scraper) can show you that magic world…

  7. CIDU Bill: thank you; I’d been wondering about these comments I’d not read in the middle of others I’d.

  8. Arthur’s (@5!) Firefox trick works with Windows Explorer but the result is not as pretty as larK’s hijack site.

  9. Ooh, I like the site with the CSS disabled. Less scrolling. 🙂 Bye, bye, nesting.

I found that the ‘post comment’ button disappeared in the non-CSS version, though. Kinda defeats the purpose of adding numbers.

  10. I use the “recent comments” list to see what I’ve missed. I click on the oldest I haven’t seen.

Yep. I open each in a new tab. This afternoon there were something like 20 tabs. Lot of chatty going on.

  11. “I tried SHIFT-G in Opera and nothing happened.”

I’m using an old Opera, not the Opera facade over Thunderbird. Also, it was a different key combo in a previous Opera.

Or it could be more nuanced. Opera lets you set what formatting to do or not do in User vs. Author modes. In User mode, I have CSS turned off. If you don’t it’s probably more complex that you want to get into to change things.

  12. Bill –

Works for me – just glad we are all back together again and appreciative of the work that you do.

  13. I come on the site – theoretically – once a week on Mondays. Since my old laptop decided to work slower and slower it has become more like – I come on the group on Monday night and Tuesday and Wednesday – occasionally even Thursday nights to finish up reading backwards – and the new @@$$!!!! laptop was suppose to correct this – but it is actually taking me longer to read online now, plus the time for transferring bookmarks, sign ins, etc for the various discussion sites I go to and I have only loaded one actual program so far – and I am hoping I have the updates for it as I don’t know if they are still available.

I start with the comic showing when I come on the page and work backwards. I keep a list of the comics I have posted on in notepad. When I am back to the point where I had read an commented before, I check for later posts (possibly replies) and then delete the listing from notepad, unless there is an ongoing discussion. (Works for me.)

What I have found lately – here and on old computer – is that when I get through a page of listing after the first pages suddenly when I click on the “show older posts” I end up missing at least one page of them – not sure if this is the nesting that has been discontinued or not. However, it is worth dealing with whatever to “be” with all of you.

  14. Have you ‘followed’ CIDU so that everything comes to your inbox, in the correct order? I did that several months ago (’bout the time we beat our records for chattiness – call me [GEEZER ALERT] Chatty Cathy), and it’s much easier and faster than going to the site itself. Not that I don’t do so; just not as often.
