Forget it, Jake, it’s Candyland

Okay, Chanukah “gelt” (chocolate money) does indeed usually come wrapped in decorated gold foil and is usually sold in little mesh bags. So far, so good.

(as opposed to “shofar, so good,” which belong to another holiday altogether)

But everything else going on here… total mystery.

  1. Gingerbread men have to use Chanukah Gelt as coins. And they are really big if you are a small gingerbread man. So toting them around in huge sacks over your back is a real pain if you are a small gingerbread man.

I think you are thinking too hard.

  2. Gingerbread men and gelt are both associated with holidays that usually fall in December (Christmas and Hanukkah) and often get conflated, so it makes cartoonish sense that gingerbread men would use gelt as their currency. Beyond that…what woozy said.

  3. “Are they going to be able to reach the meter, anyway?”

Yes, because the live in Holiday Land and the parking meters are probably candy canes.

Just don’t think too hard. The image is a gingerbread man holding a sack of Chanukah Gelt. It’s disproportionately big. Spin it into a scenario where the gingerbread men comment about it and… you get this cartoon. Which I found chuckle-worthy.

  4. Thanks, Winter, but I can’t take full credit: this was a reference to the caption of an LOL (Mother Goose and Grimm maybe?) posted here about ten years ago.

I really miss the archive sometimes…

  5. Why do they need to drive to get downtown, anyway? Couldn’t they just run, run, run, there as fast as they can?

  6. Building on Shrug’s point: even if they accumulated a whole ton of unpaid parking tickets, what do they care, since they’d never catch them, anyway…

  7. “even if they accumulated a whole ton of unpaid parking tickets, what do they care, since they’d never catch them, anyway…”

They might not be able to catch the gingerbread man, but they CAN tow his car.

  8. If that yellow car is theirs, then where is the meter? Shouldn’t it be right in front of the car? Even if it’s just off panel, there’s still an entire car length to the meter. If that’s not their car, then where are they going with the money?

  9. “where are they going with the money?”

Are you unaware of what time of year it is?
    If so, I’m jealous.
